The project ” Doing sports, the European way” (originally: Sportuvai po evropeiski) is implemented in the context of the initiative Sofia – European Capital of Sport 2018. The activities are carried out by the Association “Euro Advance” in partnership with Sofia Municipality.
The aim of the project is to increase the interest of children in more active physical activity, as one of the most important conditions for a better life. The practice is borrowed from an initiative of the European Commission in the framework of the European Week of Sport, and the main idea is to create opportunities for citizens, in particular for children, for greater physical activity in everyday life.
In recent years, studies have shown alarming facts about physical activity:
- Data from the European Centre for Economics and Business Research at the International Association of Sport and Culture show that 83% of young people in the European Union aged 11-15 are immobilized;
- Five-year-olds lead a sedentary lifestyle, with our country at the forefront of this ranking;
- Bulgarian women rank fifth in terms of obesity in Europe, according to another study by the European Academy of Nutrition Sciences;
- According to Eurobarometer, 59% of Europeans never or very rarely exercise. The European Commission warns that in some Member States this percentage is on the rise.
For this reason, it is extremely important that children are informed from an early age about the importance of physical activity and sport for their personal and social development, their health and a better life. An important role in this is played by parents, who should encourage and motivate their children to have a more active and healthier lifestyle.
